  • I was promised long form content… instead it’s more surveillance capitalism

A friend gifted me a subscription to the Contrarian, which has a solid backstory of high minded WaPo defectors starting a “better” news source. Cool. There’s great content in general on Substack. BUT it is constantly pestering me to tell it all my contacts. I accidentally clicked the only obvious button to proceed with setting up the app which added an automatically selected group of people (or companies?) that I now “follow”. I know that they can see the follow as several have followed me back. There is no way that I can find to unfollow. If I wanted more nags and nudges and invasion of privacy, I’d just stick with an existing social platform. I was hoping for something more serious, but honestly LinkedIn is better than this. (And that’s really not great!)

The one and only problem I am currently having with the app (which is probably the UI bugging out) is that whenever I subscribe to a creator that I like, the app becomes non responsive. The display darkens slightly, and it won’t recognize touch. And every time that happens, I have to close out of the app and re open it, which means the feed refreshes and I lose whatever I was looking at. It was mildly annoying at first, but it’s gotten really aggravating as of late.

When I try to sign in you want to send me a code. It takes a very long time to arrive in my email. When I put in the code it says it doesn’t recognize my email. Its the one I originally signed up with and my only email address. I’m guessing it took so long to receive the code that it expired! So how do I sign in?

It created a clear aligned model that creates the right incentives opportunities and community to succeed over time. My Proven Precursor Substack effectively advocates for the model, culture, autonomy and the success of all Substack writers, because there are a lot of otherwise threats in this part of marketplace.

Most social media are shaped like an asterisk. You are at one of the points. It looks like you are communicating directly, but the algorithm is at the very middle, directing traffic. Substack isn’t like that.
